Custom toy master Chauskoskis goes into production with his first mini Dude. Dieter Sweet Pea looks like he needs to...
Walter Jacott aka Chauskoskis discovered modeling clay, paper and pencils at the age of five and he hasn't looked back!
Throughout his working life he has gained inspiration from diverse sources such as comic books from his homeland of Mexico through to bad fantasy sci-fi movies. This all contributes to making him a multi-faceted artist who creates a wide variety of weird and strange characters. His particular style has gained him the reputation as an artist who is impossible to predict. What will he produce next?
Hello Walter, we're fascinated by your style, how do you describe it?
Disgruntled, colourful, maybe sometimes a little strange. People may not notice it but my stuff can be lugubrious, also has a lot of sadness, but you need to look carefully.
What inspires you to create?
To have fun and do what I always want to do. I remember when I was a little kid, I always said that when I grow up, my dream was to be Walt Disney or Walter Lantz. I’m on my way!
What are you working on at the moment?
Many secret projects so I can’t say much. There are a few commissions and some toy projects of my own. I’m looking forward to a few self produced toys! Some collaborations with artists that have been on hold for so long. A few shows (as always), some resin casting, some prototype toys for other artists. Busy, busy!
Which of your artwork pieces is your favourite?
WOW, this is a hard one... they are all my babies and everyone is hard to let go. But just to mention a couple, I would say, The Papi Cranston, and Sketchmunch! I’m really proud of each one.
What's the best thing about being an artist?
Honestly, I’m far from being an artist, but those who are, have this "something" that can move people’s feelings with a painting, a sculpture, a tune or a word... I think that’s pretty rad, to touch people.
We sometimes like to throw in a random question... so if you had the choice which actor would you like to play you in a film of your life?
HAHAHA best question EVER! It would have to be John Turturro. The young me, maybe... Fred Savage.
Any words of advice for aspiring artists?
First, find out if you really are one, that’s the most important thing. Maybe art is not your thing and you need to be wise enough to tell yourself: "This is not my thing, I'm not that good" Don't get me wrong on this, each of us needs to be our own toughest critic.
If you find out that this art world is your path then just be curious, watch, learn, explore, ask, listen and be honest to yourself.
What is your ultimate goal?
Easy, keep doing my thing! and try to be happier, whatever that means.
We know you as a self taught artist, so what were your main sources for learning about art.
I've not had any formal art training so most of the things I know about art comes from curiosity, books, art channels, movies. I work as a Graphic Designer too and even that I learned it in a very natural way. I always try to learn more about techniques and artists, both now and in the past.
Describe yourself in 5 words?
Regular guy with big dreams.
